Job Description Physician Advisor at Virginia Mason: Nationally Recognized Leader in Healthcare, Clinical and Academic Excellence
The Physician Advisor acts as a clinical and operations expert, educator and consultant for utilization review staff, professional coders, facility coders and Hospital Admissions Center staff while at the same time acting as a liaison between the members of those departments and medical staff on issues related to accurate documentation, utilization, regulatory compliance, length of stay and appropriate alternatives to acute care.
1. Work collaboratively with and provide educational support and training to medical and hospital staff on issues relating to documentation, utilization, cost efficiency, quality, compliance and care facilitation.
2. Assess and interpret data related to observation rates and case mix index. Lead problem-solving initiatives related to this data, present the data in an understandable format to both clinical and administrative staff alike and assist with and direct implementation of changes to address these issues. Develop expert knowledge of the Virginia Mason Production System (VMPS) and use these tools and the method for achieving positive change.
3. Serve as the lead physician on the Utilization Management Committee and the Medical Director of the Hospital Admissions Center. Review transfers from regional hospitals and provide expert financial, social and clinical expertise to the Admissions Center staff. Collaborate with administrative and clinical staff both inside and outside VM to ensure patients are receiving the best care in the correct level of care in or out of the hospital.
4. Apply and encourage the use of Virginia Mason Production System (VMPS) tools to processes affecting both administrative and clinical staff with the goal of increasing efficiency through decrease in redundant work and engagement of staff in improvement processes.
5. Interact with medical staff members and medical directors of third party payers to discuss the needs of patients and alternative levels of care.
6. Pursue additional education in quality and utilization management through continuing medical education programs and self-study.
Experience Graduate of an accredited medicine residency program. Minimum of 5 years recent experience in clinical practice, preferably as a hospitalist. Additional education in quality and utilization management through continuing medical education programs and self-study.
Qualifications: Strong dedication to service. Excellent verbal and written communication skills in multiple settings. Leadership skills.
