Our underwriters focus on answering two fundamental questions. Does this customer qualify for one of our markets? Can we get the appropriate rate for the risk? On the surface, these questions may seem straightforward, but as an underwriter, you will possess a curiosity that propels you to dig a little deeper for the answers. Underwriters are natural problem solvers who want to know our customers and how we can profitably accept the risks that our policies cover.
Our Underwriting training positions offers you the chance to build on your academic success and develop risk selection and decision making skills that can advance your career.
Responsibilities: * Successfully completes underwriter training program and prescribed courses which include: on-the-job training; classroom instruction; self-study; case studies;and underwriting activities. * Exercises judgment to accept, reject or modify new and renewal business for all Personal Lines. Works with guidance and direction from experienced underwriters or managers to ensure a profitable Personal Lines book of business. * Responsible for learning how to manage a field of agents to achieve Company growth and profitability targets. Develops on-going relationships with agents, conducts outbound calls with agents to discuss market appetite, quality of submissions and encourage profitable growth. Additionally, keeps agents up-to-date on underwriting and/or product changes. * Develops knowledge and expertise regarding policy contracts and coverages, agency relationships, underwriting guidelines, processes and procedures, desk management, and corporate strategy. * Works with in-house and outside educational providers to develop knowledge and experience in: underwriting techniques; decision-making; problem-solving; sales and negotiating skills; agency management and relationship building skills. Continued proficiency is developed by working assigned referral lists, based on demonstrated abilities and ase note that as part of our application process for this position, you may be asked to fill out an employment questionnaire that may take up to 45 minutes to complete. Qualifications:
* Bachelor's degree with a graduation date between December 2010 and December 2011 * Minimum 3.0 or higher GPA depending on school * Analytical and decision making skills * Capability to understand a wide variety of business operations and model loss potential * Strong customer service orientation * Demonstrated organization skills and ability * Effective interpersonal skills including ability to negotiate successfully. * Willingness to complete professional designation(s) and continued insurance education.
